Shadow of the Erdtree: Story

At the center of the narrative of *Shadow of the Erdtree* is Miquella, the eternally youthful son of Marika and brother of Malenia, the goddess of rot. Although Miquella is a central figure in the backstory, he never makes a proper appearance in the main game, appearing only in an optional section and in item descriptions.
Cursed to forever retain the body of a child, Miquella sought to remove the curses placed on him and Malenia by the Golden Order. After failing, he left the Order, created the Halig Tree as a counterpart to the Earth Tree, and pupated within it. However, he was kidnapped by his half-brother Mohg, the Prince of Blood, who plotted to awaken Miquella and make her a god. Before this could happen, however, the Tainted One defeated Mohg, leaving Miquella comatose in his cocoon.
In *Shadow of the Erdtree*, Miquella has ventured into the Shadowlands for unknown reasons, and gamers must follow him. The trailer suggests that Miquella awaits the "promised prince" and follows the path of his mother Marika, who once visited this land, which was cleansed in an unsung battle and burned by a character named Messmer.
The latest story trailer reveals that Miquela's journey encompasses betrayal and metamorphosis, leaving both his origins and the Golden Order behind. The "Tyranny of Messmer" hints at a new boss, and Miquela's journey may lead to a transformation that frees him from his cursed existence.
