QuadCast vs. DuoCast vs. SoloCast: Which is right for your broadcast?

by Emma Hamill 03 Sep 2024

Are you looking for a new microphone but not sure which model you need? That's understandable—after all, there are countless options when it comes to microphones. So, if you're considering the HyperX SoloCast , DuoCast , QuadCast , QuadCast S , QuadCast 2 , or ProCast , you've done everything right. To help you decide, here's some information about who each microphone is best suited for and how to set up your microphone after purchasing it.

SoloCast

Ideal for: Students, first-time streamers

The SoloCast is a powerful product in a small package. It's a simple plug-and-play USB microphone that lets you get started in no time. The included space-saving stand takes up minimal desk space. If you prefer not to have the microphone on your desk, you can also mount it on a separate boom arm. SoloCast uses a cardioid polar pattern that primarily captures sounds from the area directly in front of the device. This allows you to filter out some background noise. Ideal for environments like a college dorm, it's also priced very attractively for students as an entry-level model in the HyperX product line.

While the cardioid microphone has a single polar pattern compared to other microphones in the HyperX lineup, it still offers great features like tap-to-mute and an adjustable stand. If the SoloCast is a bit too tall and won't fit on a shelf or under your monitor, you can rotate it sideways and still get excellent recording quality. It can even be connected to a PS4 or PS5 if you want to give your teammates a real earful via the controller's built-in microphone.

DuoCast

Ideal for: First-time streamers, first-time podcasters, curious RGB gamers

If you're looking to expand your recording capabilities and add a touch of RGB to your setup, the DuoCast is a great upgrade. The SoloCast features both a cardioid and an omnidirectional polar pattern—ideal for multi-person podcasts and conference calls in a shared space. You can also record in style thanks to the RGB ring, which can be customized with different colors and behaviors using HyperX's NGenuity software.

The DuoCast features the same invaluable tap-to-mute sensor, but also offers a built-in shock mount and on-mic gain control. Together, they ensure you won't experience any unwanted bumps and knocks, even when you have a particularly enthusiastic podcast guest. These features are packaged in a sleek, minimalist design that won't take up excessive space on your desk. So, that's form and function.

QuadCast

Ideal for: Podcasters, artists, enthusiastic gamers

If you'd prefer a little more control over your microphone and are looking for a more versatile device, the QuadCast is a sensible solution. It features the same highly useful mute function as all HyperX microphones, but with additional gain controls and polar pattern options. The QuadCast lets you choose from four patterns, while the SoloCast only has one. (Speaking of patterns... QuadCast – four patterns, SoloCast – one pattern.)

In addition to the forward-firing cardioid pickup pattern, the stereo polar pattern adds a sense of space and width to recordings—ideal for musicians recording their next track. Omnidirectional mode lets you capture sound from all around the microphone. This is especially useful when recording a room full of people, such as at a conference or for podcasts with multiple participants. If your podcasts have fewer guests speaking at once, bidirectional mode lets you restore the cardioid pickup pattern in two directions for direct interviews or podcasts.

The included stand, built-in shock mount, and pop filter enhance recording quality and setup, giving you clear, professional audio right from the start.

QuadCast S

Ideal for: Aspiring Twitch partners, interior designers

If you're looking to add a little extra to your setup, the QuadCast S offers all the great features of the QuadCast plus RGB lighting. Tap-to-mute, gain control, four polar patterns, shock-absorbing boom mounts, AND dual-zone RGB lighting? That's gold for gamers making a career on streaming platforms. Download the NGENUITY software to create a lighting setup tailored to your personal brand and make sure you have it in the frame before going live. Instant capture with stunning style.

QuadCast 2

Ideal for: Gamers, streamers, content creators

The QuadCast 2 is an OP device with improved 24-bit and 96 kHz recording, giving you studio-quality audio for your streams and game commentary.

It takes everything gamers and streamers loved about the original and takes it to the next level. Featuring stunning red lighting, a tap-to-mute sensor, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a removable shock mount, it's packed with fan-favorite features.

The new aluminum silhouette ensures durability and style, while the multifunction knob allows for in-game adjustments without the need to alt-tab. Microphone gain, playback volume, and microphone monitoring can be easily adjusted, and the polar pattern can be toggled with the rotary knob. The LED indicator shows the current microphone status, so you can focus on your stream or gameplay without fiddling with software settings.

ProCast

Ideal for: Voice artists, professional podcasters, and anyone who wants the best in audio

Do you want to earn a living with your voice? As the name suggests, the ProCast is a professional condenser microphone for voice artists, podcasters, and anyone who wants to earn money by recording their own content. The ProCast uses a gold-sputtered, large-diaphragm, cardioid condenser to capture the true range and depth of your voice. This reproduces both the high and low frequencies with greater detail. And the XLR connector lets you connect the microphone directly to professional interfaces or preamps.

The ProCast is designed for professional use. It features a switchable 80 Hz filter to reduce low-frequency rumble and a vibration-dampening suspension with elastic cable suspension. The included HyperX Shield metal pop filter, which attaches to the frame, also eliminates sudden gusts of air from your recordings. The sleek design blends into any recording setup, and the versatile adapter features 3/8-inch and 5/8-inch threads compatible with most boom arms and tripods. Pro-grade audio without pro-level prices.
